Crawl space encapsulation is the process of sealing off a crawl space from the outside environment. It is typically done by installing a vapor barrier over the floor and walls of the crawl space, then sealing any openings to the outside. Doing this can improve the energy efficiency of your home, as well as prevent moisture and pests from entering the crawl space.

A moisture problem in a crawl space can be identified by looking for four signs: water stains on the foundation wall, a musty smell, mildew or fungus growth, and moist earth or gravel.

If you see any of these signs, it’s important to investigate further to determine the source of the moisture and take corrective action. If left untreated, a crawl space moisture problem can damage your home’s foundation, insulation, and wiring.

A vapor barrier is a thin sheet of plastic or other material used to prevent water vapor from passing through walls, ceilings, and floors. A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air.

In general, you will need both a vapor barrier and a dehumidifier in climates with high humidity levels and buildings that have not been appropriately constructed to prevent moisture infiltration.
